Notes from the Cell 2 Soul Conference, November 2006
The grating chalk of medical school
and waterboarding as a resident
lead to a plateau of relief
as attending physician.
Later patients file in like ducklings landing ashore.
Doctors strive for empathy:
"Look in the mirror of your life,
and you will see a patient."
Waves of mindfulness riffle the air like
autumn leaf showers; each patient
a short story stretching out
to a life observed from a life observing.
Medicine walks with art as doctors
enhance their powers of observation,
but they also know what can't be seen
counts the most in measuring a life.
