Living With Hope — A Sermon

Jane E. Babin, J.D.

Cell 2 Soul. 2005 Spring; 1(1):a1

What is it like to learn you have a fatal illness? How does one maintain hope in the face of insurmountable odds? How does one learn to maintain quality of life while learning to die? These are some of the questions addressed here. Diagnosed in 2003 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, she discusses how hope plays a central role in dealing with the despair and sense of loss that often accompanies such a diagnosis. She also speaks about how relationships with loved ones, friends, family and those in the medical community change over the course of the dying process. The author will attempt to put a human face on this disease as she shares the fears, the sorrows and the humor of living with dying.
